Visiting a Business/Volunteering

Description

You will spend a ½ day volunteering your services and time at a business or charity organization and then prepare a business profile about the place where you volunteered. You are encouraged to either work in your neighbourhood, community group or small business. You should spend at least 3 or 4 hours volunteering with a focus to understand how the business operates. You may also form small groups with other classmates and volunteer together (the business profiles will need to be individual however).

Ideas of where to volunteer

·  Returning to the service organization you worked with on the Gr. 11 service trip

·  Sorting clothes at Goodwill or sorting food at your local food bank

·  Volunteering at your church

·  Entering data at a computer-type business

·  Helping out at a friend/ neighbour or relative’s small business

·  Volunteering at a school you attended from K to Gr. 8

·  Visiting the people at a retirement home

·  Helping out at a local corner store, hair salon, sporting good store or restaurant

·  Any other idea that is discussed with your teacher!

Business Profile & Self-evaluation

Ask the person who supervised you directly to sign the letter given to you by your teacher. Prepare a business profile presentation so we can hear about different types of businesses, or a different take on similar businesses. Presentations are separate even if you worked at the same place as another student.

Your presentation includes:
1) Description of the Business/organization you volunteered at (you may wish to copy these questions and type a response):

a) Give a brief description of the business (purpose; mission statement; for profit; not-for profit).

b) Is the business service-based, product-based or a combination of the two?

c) Outline the employee structure at this business (who does what; who reports to whom).

d) Explain the marketing strategy used by the business to promote the business, the products, the services and/or the community impact.

e) What environmental or social justice concerns involves this particular business or the industry in general? Give details.

2) What did you learn on your visit to this business/organization? Would you be interested in working here or managing a similar business of your own? Why/Why not? How could you have improved how you set up this visit and how you worked there? Feel free to discuss anything else that you noticed about the business.

RE: Volunteer opportunities

The business students at
Toronto District Christian High School have been asked to spend their project day volunteering their services. They are encouraged to either work at a non-profit organization or to volunteer their time in their neighbourhood, community group or small business. They will be preparing a business profile of the place where they worked.

I would appreciate it if you could supervise a student(s) in their volunteer work, and sign this letter to verify their involvement for at least three to four hours. They are encouraged to do any work or service that you need completed.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please contact me. Email: burridge@tdchristian.ca. School: 905-851-1772.

Yours truly,

Michelle Burridge, Business Teacher, TDCH.
