At Toronto District Christian High School, teachers strive to educate whole persons to praise God in their work, as well as in their play. To achieve this goal, a TDChristian offers opportunities in the area of extracurricular sports. Extracurricular sports, in Christian young people, fosters Christian commitment as evident in the following attributes: joy in sport, release of tension, self-control, honesty, perseverance, concentration, intelligence, skillfulness and a sense of community. In their desire to glorify God in sport, Christian athletes must be keenly aware of their own call to play competitively, but also to respect their opponents as fellow image bearers. To be truly Christian, therefore, extracurricular sports must demonstrate a careful blend of expressive play and responsible action.
An athletic program must educate for responsible action. Just as a coach can create an expectation of good motor performance, so can a coach reinforce positive behaviour patterns.
Athletes should discover through sport creative and joyful living. They should gain insight into the talents the Lord has given them and how to use these talents to glorify Him. They will experience the thrill of performing well under pressure, being creative in the game situation, contributing to a team effort and the enjoyment of extending personal limits to see what the body and mind can do.
Christian athletes have choices of personal conduct. Athletes must be expected to demonstrate commitment, respect for the coach, opponents, teammates and officials and use appropriate language. Athletes should demonstrate a desire to be responsible for their own fitness and honour God through the care of their own bodies. Joy-filled Christian athletics happen when Christian athletes have made positive choices in the areas of perseverance and intensity of effort, self-knowledge and self-control under stress, integrity and self-respect.
Currently TDChristian athletes and girls and boys teams compete in the junior and senior divisions of the York Region Athletics Association (YRAA) in badminton, cross country running, basketball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, and volleyball. We also offer an exciting intramural ice hockey program.
